As we slide into the second half of 2021 and condemn the darks of 2020 to solemn memory, it is time to begin re-operation of the norms of life. Already, bars and restaurants are opening their doors, sports arenas are welcoming throngs of eager fans and international tourism is beginning to show signs of life.

It is easy to get swept away by this grand sense of relief and communal hopefulness, and why not! It has been a strange and uncertain time for many and a lonely and difficult one for many more. However, we persevered. And now it’s time to reclaim the streets; the parks and beaches; the cities’ forgotten places. To be out and about and happy!

And once this initial rush of freedom has subsided, you might find yourself asking what was normal life anyway? The answer is simple and complex; for it is our social glue that makes our society. All the weddings, birthdays, holidays, work parties, get-togethers, fundraisers, brunches, baby showers, movie nights and many many more which we had to cancel, postpone, defer, delay, shelve, raincheck and simple be without. All these things have hurt our social conscious both individually and on a grand scale. So how do we repair this? We do them all!

The best way to return to normal is to walk the walk and re-engage with people proactively. While for some, returning to normal may mean concerts, festivals and international sporting events, let us not lose sight of the small events – the dinners, birthdays, girls’ nights in – for it is these small gatherings which truly define our communities whether they be at work, school or among family and friends.
